Victorian 6 Hour & 50 Km Track Championships

20th November 2010.

Wow, what a great day Saturday turned out to be. The weather gods were smiling on us, although it was a little ironic that the year we put the start time back because of horrible weather the previous 2 years, is the year the sun beats down on us like a drum! All of my sleepless nights worrying about how the day would come together were for nothing, as the day went off without a hitch. With 20 individual and 20 relay runners, the atmosphere was electric, although a couple of relay teams were sweating on their runners turning up, and they did, some with literally seconds to spare! I will say my big thankyous to the volunteers that turned up now, as without them the day would not have turned out as well as it did. Mick Bridle turned up about an hour before the race and casually asked if there was something he could do! I nearly rugby tackled him with joy, as he was the first non running harrier to offer help.

Text Box:

He ended up lap scoring for Jason Anderson from Warrnambool for a few hours until Diana's sons Isaac and Eli took over, so a huge thankyou to you all. A big thanks to Annie Pawley, a lady who has done some runs with us before, and wanted to repay our kindness by giving up her day to lap score for the whole 6hrs. The relay teams had volunteered to lap score if needed, but thanks to the willingness of other competitors' lap scorers and our own volunteers, this was not necessary, and everyone could just enjoy the day. Thanks heaps to Terry O'Neill, who had come to score for his wife, Warragul walker Karyn. He also did my laps, and was incredibly encouraging, spurring me on when I wanted to give up, and helping me to achieve a better distance than I had hoped for. Greg and Cheryl from Gippsland Athletics also scored for a few hours, thank you both for your support. Derek came to help, but all the spots were filled, so he just cheered us on, good on you.
I could go on for pages and pages about the whole race, but that would bore everyone silly, so I will pick out a few highlights. I must say firstly, that everyone who competed was amazing, each having different goals, times, and distances they wanted to achieve, but one commonality was that all just wanted to be there at the end, to finish a very tough and mentally challenging event, and that put us all-fast, slow, walkers and runners in the same league, and this is what running should be about.
The girls were incredible this year, not just in effort, but in their support of other runners too. Bernadette Benson was a real character, not only did she win the whole event with an amazing 70.406km, but she gave out heaps of encouragement along the way, even telling me I was an inspiration to her because of my determination to finish even though I hadnít done much training in the last 2 years! Nikki Wynd and her running partner Darren Mooney also gave me great support, asking me near the end if I had made the Mara distance yet. When I finally did they both cheered me as if I had won, it was amazing! Sharon Scholz was fantastic, unfortunately sustaining a back injury prior to the race stopped her from going for the female record, but she still did an amazing effort, coming second in the female 6hr and 50km, with Nikki 3rd, and walker Michelle Thompson 4th, cracking the 50km mark with a few minutes to spare, what an effort Michelle! Corny won the 50km event, and although tired, he was deservedly pleased with his effort. He joked that doing the 50 was a good way of getting out of doing the whole 6hrs, but some of us would love to be able to do 50 in the first place!
Well done Corny. Ken's way of dealing with the heat was to go for a swim half way through the race! That was hilarious, and the bugger still beat me. You crack me up. John Jervis had not planned on doing the 6hrs, hoping to join a relay team, but ended up doing the whole thing. He doesn't like going around in circles, and found the day mentally and physically draining, but to his credit, still plugged away and finished with a great distance- way to tough it out John! The menís 6hr was hotly contested with only 23m separating 1st and 2nd; in the end- can you believe it? Mal Gamble just edged out Greg Love, with Darren Mooney in 3rd place. Talking about hotly contested, how about the relay? Only 366m separated Team Derelique from Team DARRC, you canít get much better than that. Derelique consisted of Anna, Duncan, David Griffiths, and 2 touch footy members, Travis and a lady whose name I donít know (sorry) they battled with Embo, Rob Semmler, Col and Daniel Metcalf and Big Al, and were very excited to pip them at the post. Not to forget the other amazing teams, with 3rd place going to Team Noglarart Sreirrah with Twitey, Wil,Liz, Stephen White and Therese Elliott putting up a great challenge and having a ball! Fourth place went to the gutsy Team Back Packers, with Sue, Diana, Anne, Madelon and Trevor all excelling in the hot conditions, with Sue even stripping off to fend off the heat! I heard someone ask if this was survivor(as they donít wear much clothing) and I think the answer is YES, all competitors survived and made it through, some a little worse for wear, but survived we did.
