The late Geoff (Swaggy ) Wilson was a member of the
Traralgon Harriers from the early days of the Club until his life was
tragically ended in 1997. He was an outstanding runner in sprint events
as well as long distance races. Swaggy was also an excellent Club member
and a most likeable and interesting person. It was an enjoyable experience
going on a long distance training run with him. Swaggy also had an excellent
sense of humour. His passing was a very sad occasion for his family, many
friends and all who knew him. After his death the Traralgon Harriers decided
to have the annual Geoff (Swaggy) Wilson Memorial 12km road race in his
memory. This event is held during July each year from the Harriers Club
Steve Quirk wins his 3rd Swaggy Wilson Memorial 12km Road Championship.
The 9th Annual running of the Traralgon Harriers 12km Road Championship saw Steve Quirk win the event for the third straight year. Leanne Keating who has only been running with the club for the last month took out the female title. The event which has been run in memory of former Traralgon Harrier Geoff “Swaggy” Wilson since 1997 attracted 23 runners in the main 12km event. Junior Matthew Mullens tried hard to stick with Steve Quirk early but found the winner too strong. Matt continued to run strongly and finished outright second and first under 18 junior. Bruce Salisbury finished outright third and first vet. In the females a good battle was fought between Leanne Keating and Pauline Lindsay with Leanne breaking away near the finish. Pauline took out the first female vet.
